Possessive Love in Secrets and Lies and Beloved  Ã‚        The word â€Å"freedom† is subject to various degrees of interpretation in the sense that it can be used in more than one context.   One definition of freedom is the idea of having your own sense of self without the control of others.   On the other hand, a lack of freedom is the idea of feeling trapped and smothered in a situation one has no control over.   Freedom can relate to school, relationships, or even within oneself.   A lack of freedom can have nothing to do with other people but with the ball and chain that can be placed on by oneself.   Of course the outside world will be involved, but the pain of feeling trapped comes from the frustration that fills one’s soul.   A lack of freedom can result from a twisted circle of other events and other people.   In the novel Beloved and the film Secrets and Lies, the enslavement that Roxanne and Denver feel result from their mothers’ possessive love.   Sethe and Cynthia both have horrific pasts , leaving them in captivity and causing them to have unhealthy relationships with their daughters.   Sethe and Cynthia love the only way the know how, possessively and dependently, causing Denver and Roxanne’s mental enslavement.   In the film Secrets and Lies, both Cynthia and her twenty-one year-old daughter Roxanne, live a life of captivity.   Cynthia’s is due to her unexplained past, while Roxanne’s is in result of her overbearing mother.   Cynthia’s lack of freedom does not result from another’s actions, but from her own past.   The trauma and lack of love she has experienced, has been blocked out and instead of dealing with it, she lives off of the attention of others.   When she meets her daughter Hortense, whom she had given up for adopt... ...or a life as it is now under Beloved’s control, she chooses a life for herself.   By having support for the first time, freeing both of her daughters, and restoring her sense of self, Sethe is on her way to a life of happiness and trust, rather than dependence on others.   Although their backgrounds are completely different, both Cynthia and Sethe battle the same demons.   Their pasts have consumed them and dependence on others, or complete isolation is the only way they know how to deal with it.   This causes the mental enslavement of Roxanne and Denver.  Ã‚   In order to overcome their emotional scars, they must learn to stand on their own two feet.   Only when they do this will they be able to release their daughters, and restore their own self worth and freedom for all.       Works Cited Morrison, Toni.   Beloved.   New York: Penguin Books, 1998.

Sometimes they are joyous and pleasant, where the conflict of the novel is resolved and everyone lives happily ever after. And other times, endings can be sad, lamentable, and downright evil. Beowulf's ending shows a sharp contrast between both types of endings. His character, along with the tragic events in the book, allowed for this ambiguous ending. But, in my opinion and when thought about closely, Beowulf, ends in an extremely terrible fashion.    Beowulf, Ecgtheow's son, is strong in mind and body. He is born a true hero.. He backs up his extraordinary feats with a powerful sense of social responsibility and morality. He is also engaging and humane. These good qualities often blind readers to his other traits. He, in my opinion, is a selfish, power hungry, and attention grabbing fool. He never asks for help even when he needs it, he prefers recognition rather than doing the right thing, and he puts others at danger to prove himself worthy. As a young man, he is a bit wild and reckless, who swims for seven days in the open sea to satisfy a foolish wager. Beowulf later admits that it was his false pride that made him accept the bet. When Hrothgar asks Beowulf to fight Grendel, he does not hesitate. His only request is that if he is killed, his armor should be returned to Hygelac, for he is loyal to the King of Geatland. Once Grendel has been wounded and chased away, Beowulf agrees to fight Grendel's mother, who want s vengeance for her son's death. When he succeeds in killing her, he severs her head and the head of the dead Grendel to show as a symbol of his success and bravery. At a young age, Beowulf was strong. He was physically and mentally able to fight Grendel and Grendel's mother. He triumphed over them and won great fame. But this all went straight to his head. 50 years later, as an old and weak man, he puts himself at risk once again to fight the dragon. His mental and physical stamina are nowhere near his old self, but being stubborn, he fights the dragon anyway.

Bounded Rationality in Education

I am inspired most by the cognitive bias and the risk control of the decision- making while learning this course. Having been engaged in the financial industry for years, I am deeply aware of the fact that most individual investors tend to perform those bounded rationalities for characteristics of decision-making while making investment, but I can’t find out the reason for their existence.After learning this course, however, I feel suddenly enlightened. The phenomenon that has bothered me so long is caused under the influence of the cognitive bias and emotion which will affect the risk assessment and judgment made to the investment object. In western countries, most families make investment mainly in dominant financial assets including stock, bond, real estate and insurance and have strong awareness of the risk averse in above fields.Meanwhile, there’re many organizations and books about the decision-making that are referred to by the individual investor. In Chinese fam ilies, in addition to the above investment of the financial assets, the investment of the family education, as a special form which involves all Chinese people, takes a large proportion. This is because a long-term funding is made by parents ever since their kids are born as a result of the non-free education in China. Never let children lose at the starting line† and â€Å"education is the largest investment† are two popular education ideas in our country, which comprehensively inflect the current situation of Chinese families’ investment to the children education. As parents put the entire earning into their kids, a good return is surely expected. But since income is companied with risk, Chinese education investment, therefore, belongs to the risk investment and, meanwhile, has the specific characteristic that is not covered in western theory.The invest object in this essay is mainly about the education domain in China, I think it’s also necessary to app ly the theory of this course to avoiding the influence of the cognitive bias as well as the mental trap and the irrationality in the education investment. Bazerman argued that the misapplication of heuristics to inappropriate situations leads people astray. It’s difficult to calculate the specific input and output of the family education investment in a quantitative way, resulting in the ambiguity of the assessment of the effect of the education investment.As there’re a large number of variables of the non-monetary cost-benefit in the education investment, our estimation has to be adopted to judge the cognitive part SYSTEM 1. Regarding the availability heuristic, some people think that it is generated due to the overwhelming memory and search bias, that is to say, not all information will be searched unbiasedly while related information is searched in memory.Decision makers of families tend to use information that is easy to access, so the limit ation in searching information is inevitable since people can’t have a comprehensive knowledge about the professional quality of education providers, the demand for the education products in future market as well as the state of educatee’s endeavor and intelligence. We can say that the characteristics of the information insufficiency and asymmetry really stand out.Besides, there’s a distinct asymmetry in the cost and benefit of the education investment caused by the hysteretic nature of the decision-making effectiveness of the education investment. The decision-making of the education investment, built based on the future expectation, is a subjective expected value by people. Information that is searched from memory in the first place will become the major foundation for people to make judgment and decision as this information has advantage in the stimulus frequency, novelty and vitality.For example, high education means high income. Studying at college is, on a whole, positively correlated to the income obtained by children in the future. Parents tend to compare their children with the group of the same age in the education level, usually with those accessible ones such as relatives, colleagues or those reported in news media. TSS Therapeutic Support Staff or One to One Aide Definition: A TSS or Therapeutic Support Staff, is staff that supports individual students. They are often called one to one aides or wrap around staff. Therapeutic support staff are hired to work with an individual student. Their employment is usually named as an accommodation in that students IEP. TSS are often paid for or paid by the local (county) mental health agency rather than the school district. Qualifications:   Being a TSS does not require a college degree, but often graduates with degrees in psychology find work as a TSS while they are pursuing advanced degrees. Requirements for employment as a TSS or One on One (as they are often popularly referred to) may vary from state to state or agency to agency, but often some college is required.    Usually these positions are considered educational rather than custodial, and many states are trying to avoid using TSSs.   Some are economic, but some are educational, as a student with a TSS often becomes prompt dependent and unable to function independently. Responsibility:   A TSSs primary responsibility is to the student for whom they are hired. They may help the teacher or other students in order to create a positive environment for their student, but they are not supervised directly by the teacher, but by the IEP. This constitutes a sort of freedom for the digital users, and this is most typical in news sites, wherein the viewers are allowed to post comments without indicating their true identities, keeping their privacy in a world that is being presented in public. As indicated in the article, â€Å"Anyone could weigh in and remain anonymous† (Perez-Pena, 2010, p. 1), and this leads to the question on whether or not viewers of Internet sites should be allowed to remain anonymous when dictating their comments and suggestions. This is a very significant ethical problem associated to IT, since it has been ethically accepted that any type of idea or sentiment should be associated to the respectful person who has formed the idea. According to Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post, Anonymity is just the way things are done. It’s an accepted part of the Internet, but there’s no question that people hide behind anonymity to make vile or controversial comments. (Perez-Pena, 2010, p. 1) It has, therefore, been advised that viewers should indicate their factual names, especially when making a significant commentary about the society. They should use their real names, and this may be done by requiring people to register first before posting their commentaries. Ethical problems in privacy According to the article that Scott Rosenberg (2010) wrote entitled ‘Online Comments Need Moderation, Not Real Names’, there is also the statement that defines how newspaper website managers have been reacting in terms of anonymity and privacy keeping. As stated, â€Å"If only they could make people sign their real names, surely the atmosphere would improve† (Rosenberg, 2010, p. 1). Online conversation spaces make media outlets turn the common software on and then leave them as it is, as if the discussions would â€Å"magically take care of themselves† (Rosenberg, 2010, p. 1). The problem, however, is that the commenters should not be faceless and should carry identities that are open for the other viewers. This problem is in the identity system, with the Web having no identity system that would ethically reconnect the idea to the person who has declared it. As stated in the article, The Web has no identity system, and though the FBI can track you down if the provocation is dire enough, and if you get editors mad enough they can track you down, too, most media companies aren’t going to waste the time and money. (Rosenberg, 2010, p. 1) Ethical privacy problems can also be in the form of ‘hacking’ or â€Å"using unauthorized access to an information system† (Floridi, 2008, p. 43). This indulges privacy and confidentiality. Conclusion There are other ethical problems associated with the IT of the modern social world, such as using the new technology in order to cheat one’s taxes, or deviating the user from his or her true name or identity. It can also be in the form of wardriving wherein people try to connect wirelessly to other people’s networks (Moor, 2008, p. 33). All these unethical conducts can create an enormous social impact that leads to technological revolution that can contract IT in its power stage. With proper management, it can develop the IT into something that is more powerful and enormous, without the ethical problems that have large-scale effects on the society. History of the Boogeyman

History of the Boogeyman Throughout Folklore worldwide there is a great diversity of monsters, but one seems to link them all; the Boogy Man. His stories have been passed down for generations, mainly to keep children from disobeying their parents. But this dark tale would not be forgotten easily, rather it stuck with them into their older lives. The boogeyman is a feared monster by all generations, but is so feared or prominent in todays new age, new technological era? Discover the way in which the boogy man still has his hand in the the world of fear. Origins of the Boogy Man: To understand why the Boogy Man is so fearsome and has burned his mark in the world; you must know how he came to be known. Stories around the world depict him in different ways, making it hard to track his exact origin story down. The key to recognizing a true boogeyman is through the concept of children. More famously, the taking of children; or even in some cases, devouring. In America, he is usually thought of as the scary evil that lurks beneath the bed, but in many countriesfrom Latin countries to Europe, the Caribbean and some areas of India and Asia he is a man with a sack who kidnaps disobedient children, either to keep for a while or to eat them for dinner, (Breyer 1). A common theme among all the different types of boogie men is to take bad children away. His story is varied among countries, but scholars have traced his roots the Middle English. Looking simply at the name boogy or bogey it can be traced to bogge/bugge middle english. From there it is derived from German boggle, boggle-man, (Breyer 1) This theory doesnt exactly pinpoint the origin, however it does give a rather big clue. Germany. But no story is exactly given credit as being the origin of the Boogy Man. New age Mr. Boogie: In this new day and age, the world seems to have moved beyond its more primitive nature of believing in stories and rather relying on science. Reasoning is held as the point of knowledge rather than religion and old wise tales. However, has this rid the world of the Boogie Mans hold, or has he just evolved to fit the worlds ever growing technological culture? Many would agree that he is gone, others would say differently; more that he is scarier than ever. New interpretations of The Boogeyman are everywhere, all over social media and entertainment. One field that he has dominated is film. Many movies have come out depicting a boogy man. One recent film would be Sinister and its sequel Sinister 2 directed by Scott Derrickson. In this new age telling of the Boogie Man he is seen as a tall male figure with paper white skin and black holes where his eyes and nose should be, also no mouth. The apparently a demon named Bagul to which he is also referred to by other char acters of the film as Mr.Boogie. He is the embodiment of fear. Like all the tales he is said to be after the children, and in once scene the main protagonist is speaking with a professor where they discuss the demon Bagul. Its a symbol associated with the worship of a pagan deity. A very obscure one dating back to Babylonian times named Bughuul, the Eater of Children. The crimes that youre dealing with, they all have the element of a missing child, correct? Well, Bughuul eats children. Now, the fragments of stories that have survived, they all revolve around him needing the souls of human children away from the physical world and traps them in his own nether world and consumes their soul over time. Now any worship of this deity would include a blood sacrifice or the wholesale eating of a child. Professor Jonas describing Bagul, (Derrickson) The next popular interpretation is in the very popular film A Nightmare Before Christmas written by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick. The antagonist of the story is a creepy bug filled creature, that is not only feared by humans but also the other halloween towns folk. In the film the children call him Mr. Oggie Boogie. The last well known film depicting a Boogy Man would be A Nightmare On Elm Street written by Wes Craven. This movie does not come right out with the Antagonist being a boogy man, however looking at the character himself he has the characteristics of one. He is an old, terrifying old man whose victims are kids. These movies are very popular movies that have scared the dickens out of many, over a wide range of generations. Like in the old days, the story of the Boogeyman was to keep children from disobeying their parents. The question is; do children still know and fear the Boogeyman? In an interview with 3 year old Josslyn Lovell, she was to describe the creature and what he does. He is tall, and scarey. With Black hair. And big Claws. And he eats little kids. she was then asked if she believed he was real. Yes. The final question she was asked was what she would do if she saw him, scream! (Josslyn). At 3 she knows and understands the Boogeyman and is scared of him just as they use to be. The other child interviewed was Madeline Wallace age 9. She was asked the same like of questions. She said the boogy man has Tall, like 8 feet! He has pointy teeth and red eyes. He gets bad kids and eats them up! (Madeline). She was also asked if she had seen the Boogeyman to which she replied, Yes Sissy! Hes scary! I ran and hid in my bed!. Maybe it was a figment of her imagination or maybe he is real. This goes to show that the Bogeyman is just as alive as ever, and still has his grasp on the world; spreading his fear and terror all over, Through out the new age he has not vanished; he has evolved into an even more terrifying being. Maybe with the worlds technology, rather than him fading away, it has actually given him a very real persona. No longer is he a story that whispers through generations. The sight of it brings back a slight sob to Linda's throat, when she reaches the cement stoop her sobbing once again becomes full. Charley looks to her but is at a loss for words. Happy puts his arms around his mother and holds her. Biff only looks on at it all. For a brief second he sees the Willy's fate in Happy's eyes as he holds Linda. Willy's death has brought Biff to know what he is more than ever. He's not a salesman and neither is Happy but Happy is just like is father and Biff fears nothing can be done to change the course of life Happy has chosen upon Willy's death. The small grieving party enters the house and each takes a seat in the living room. Linda has gained control over herself again. No one dares to say a word they each sit by themselves accompanied by their own thoughts. Biff's mind is racing now. Thoughts of how his life will not end like Willy's. Biff has no master plan for his life he just wishes to begin his life. His real life. "Construction" Biff accidentally says allowed. Everyone looks at him. What about construction. Happy says to Biff. Tomorrow I'll look for a job in construction is Biff's reply. I'll start at the bottom and I'll gradually raise my position. Someday maybe architecture or engineering. By god I'm gonna do something with my life weather it's to my families approval or not. Charley looks at Biff and says. Biff I don't know if this is the right time for this. It's sounds like a good idea to me but I honestly don't think this is the time to talk about it. I'm sorry Charley you're right I'm going to bed now I'll see you all tomorrow. Biff stands up stretches his arms and back and goes off to bed. Biff wakes up early the next morning. No one else has woken yet and Charley had gone home the night before. Despite the death of his father hanging over him like a dark, dreary cloud Biff is in an unexplainably great mood. He felt as if his life was just beginning on this day.

Nostradamus: The Truth Behind the Prophecies Essay -- Prophecy Prophet

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For Many years scholars and interpreters have been trying to find any truth that could possibly be found in the writings of Nostradamus. For many occasions people have been convinced that this man could see the future and he documented it in his many journals and books titled The Centuries. The writings and prophecies have been a controversial issue for many years. Most Nostradomus translators have more than likely misinterpreted his work because of his nearly illegible style of writings, thus false information is commonly found about this man of the past.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Nostradamus, a French Jew converted to Christian who lived in France in the 16th century. Born Michel de Nostredame on December 14th 1503 in St. Remy, France. He was the oldest of five children. His grandfather, Jean, taught him Latin, Greek, Hebrew, mathematics and astrology at an early age. Nostradamus received a medical degree in 1529 and became a physician. â€Å"Nostradamus made his reputation as a doctor of extraordinary skill gave generously to the poor.† (Sobel B)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Nostradamus was in his late when he frequently went into a meditative state and reported to have visions of the future. He began to document his visions in a number of journals in a mixture of Latin, French, and Greek quatrains, publishing his famous â€Å"Centuries† in 1558. Nostradamus had married twice, losing his first wife and children to the plague. Living in France from 1503-1566 AD, making a living as a wealthy French astrologer and physician, Nostradamus led an almost perfect life for his time.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Frechman also predicted his own death which occurred on July 2, 1566. I would also predict it to happen in a large city like our ever so brilliant Nostradamus. Answer this, how many things have happened in the city as result to fire. Eventually it would come true and Nostradamus was no dummy.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Is it wrong to assume that Nostradamus could in fact predict the future? From the information gathered it is easy to come to the conclusion that the writings of Nostradamus can no more tell the future than a child’s nursery rhyme.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A prediction that can only be interpreted after the events it supposedly foresees have occurred is not a â€Å"predition† at all. Anyone could spew out a thousand vague â€Å"prophecies† and not have to explain what they meant until after the events they supposedly predicted had occurred. With this it is possible for anyone to manage a pretty impressive record for accuracy too.

Why are fast food restaurants so popular? That question in now very popular. Some people around the world still don’t understand why the fast food restaurants are still popular, despite the eventual inconveniences mentioned daily. I think that fast food restaurants are popular because of their availability, they avoid cooking, and because of their prices. One of the causes of the popularity of fast food restaurants is their availability. Indeed, people can find fast food restaurants everywhere.Nowadays, those restaurants are built on the main streets, in business buildings and in the neighborhood in order to allow a quick access to their clients. For example, there is a fast food restaurant at North Lake College. Whether I like or not, it’s the nearest restaurant that I can find when I have a break. Therefore, I will obviously go there to grab something for not being hungry during the coming classes. Consequently, the availability is on the cause of the popularity of fa st food restaurants.Another cause of the popularity of fast food restaurants is that they allow us not to cook. Indeed, some people may be very busy by their job, a project or a school program, which does not allow them enough time to cook. Therefore, they will be tempted by an easier choice, which is the fast food restaurant. Why? Simply because the fast food restaurants are faster than normal restaurants, so they allow people to spend more time on their job, or projects. In addition, some people do not know how to cook.Therefore, these restaurants are help for them. Furthermore, you can find different menus in these restaurants, which give a large choice of foods to the clients. Consequently, the fast food restaurants are popular because they allow people to avoid cooking. A last cause of the popularity of fast food restaurants is the price. As you know, the fast food restaurants are the cheapest you can find. Not everybody has the opportunity, or the money to afford for a lunch i n a restaurant. Therefore, people prefer to spend their money in fast foods.In addition, in order to save, some people are more tempted to buy fast foods than to eat in restaurants. Consequently, the price is another of the popularity of the fast food restaurants. In conclusion, the fast food restaurants may be popular because of their availability, they avoid cooking, and because of their prices. Being available everywhere, allowing people to avoid some household tasks, and even allowing them to save money are some of the reasons that make the fast food restaurants very popular.

In the 1800s, income tax was introduced, first to support wars and eventually, to support the UK government's deficit. Currently, Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is in charge of collecting taxes in the United Kingdom. There are several types of tax that are payable periodically by certain entities in the UK. They include Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Duties on goods and services, National Insurance Contribution, Value Added Tax and Fuel Duty. All these taxes have different laws and guiding principles. This tax is levied on the profits of businesses. Corporation tax is calculated on the annual income of a business. It was first introduced in the Finance Act 1965 . Corporation tax in the UK is currently regulated by the Income & Corporation Tax and its subsequent amendments. According to Sections 6 and 11 of the Income & Corporation Tax Act (ICTA), corporation tax must be paid by three main groups of entities: 1. UK resident companies. This include companies that are incorporated in the UK. 2. Non-resident companies in the UK carrying out trade through a permanent establishment and 3. Unincorporated bodies which are not partnerships that fall within the scope of the tax like societies and voluntary associations. Section 8 of the ICTA (1988) indicates that there are two types of profits that are taxed in the corporation tax (McLaughlin, 2011): 1. The worldwide income of a UK resident company. This includes all the earnings of all the operations of such a company around the globe. 2. For non-resident companies that have permanent establishments in the UK, corporation tax is levied on the income of the UK permanent establishment. The Act goes further to define 'profits' to include revenue or income from three main sources (McLaughin, 2011). The first is the revenue accrued from normal operations of the company. The second is capital gains which encompasses revenue from the sale of an asset in an accounting period. Finally, profits include investment income and revenue from dividends and other earnings from other investments. The term 'accounting period' comes with complications. Depending on the circumstances of a business, 'accounting period' can be an event that determines the commencement o r termination of trade like the start of business or the termination of business (Section 12). An accounting period is normally required to last for a period of 12 months. In most cases, the financial year begins on 1st April and ends on 31st March of every year. Where the accounting period overlaps this period, it must be apportioned appropriately and taxes are calculated as required. In 2011, the corporation tax was 26%. Companies that earn between ?50,000 and $300,000 will be subjected to a lower tax rate of 20%. There are some marginal reliefs that are calculated for companies that earn profits between ?300,000 and ?1,500,000. This marginal relief ensures that such companies pay between 20 and 26%. However, companies earning over ?1.5 million in profits have to pay the full 26% of corporation tax. Income Tax Income tax is on an individual's earnings. It is calculated annually.
